Devon Open Triples 2022

31 July

7 teams, including one from Kernow, entered the open played for the first time in Plymouth. The weather was warm and sunny with a few light showers but that didn't stop play.
Congratulations
to the winners Des and Kim Wraight and Dave Trevail who beat Den and Carol Williams and Ann-Marie Stanley in the main final.
Congratluations also to Ged and Anne Barton along with Mike Anderson who won the plate.

Devon Singles & Shooting 2022

July

Honiton was the venue for Sunday's regional Singles & Shooting Championships. Good playing conditions and a fair entry list ensured some high quality competition. And for all players it made for an enjoyable day of boule.
Congratulations go to Ann-Marie Stanley for becoming the 2022 Singles Champion. She defeated Mike Porter 13-11 in an excellent hard fought final. Both had emerged from the semi finals despite finishing runners up in the two groups from the first stage. Mike Anderson took the honours in the Plate competition.
The shooting competition ran concurrently during the day with Mike Porter comfortably becoming the champion with 25 points, equalling the previous record.
Well done again to both our new Regional Champions!

3 way inter regional 2022

July

3-WAY INTER-REGIONAL COMPETITION
It seems an age since we last staged a full six team 3-way match between Devon, Kernow and GWR. Pre Covid it was an annual event. So it was good to see friends, old and new, from around the west country gather at the Isca Centre on Sunday.
It was of course a very (almost too!) hot day, but the boule was highly competitive as you would expect from local rivals. And it was played in the usual friendly spirit with much banter!
We were of course delighted to come out on top, it has been a long time since we tasted success. Final scores were; Devon 78 points, GWR 54 and Kernow 27.
A long hot day saw each team play 6 timed games. Three points were awarded for a win with one each for a draw. That meant 36 games in all for each region and very pleased to say that Devon took 26 games which was not a bad return. All Devon teams contributed with at least 3 wins or more.
GWR were in front after the first round of matches, but Devon took the lead after the second round and stayed ahead for the rest of the match.
Our thanks go to host club Isca PC who received a contribution from the well supported raffle, along with the three regions.
We look forward to next year and some more excellent boule.

Devon Open Doubles 2022

July

Ottery St Mary PC staged Sunday's open pairs tournament that saw a strong field of 16 teams take part. The weather held good, the competition was fierce, and the friendly spirit prevailed.
The format was a stage of four groups in the morning followed by four KO competitions in the afternoon - decided by placings in those earlier groups.
In the Gold competition, congratulations go to the home based pair of Paul Puddicombe & Keith Tizzard. The overall winners beat Honiton's Chris Green & Mike Porter in the final. Third place was taken by Den & Carol Williams, also from Honiton, they overcame the other Ottery pair of John & Rose Thatcher in their play off. That completed the top four on the day.
In the Silver competition Chris Jeffrey & John Violet from Pig On The Hill took the honours beating the Honiton pair of Ron Hutchinson & Chris Bigmore in the final. Bronze A competition was won by Colin Booth from Kernow & Mike Anderson from Pig on the Hill (a last minute partnering due to Covid). Bronze B winners were Ged & Ann Barton, also Pig On The Hill.
Medals and prizes were awarded at the end of play by Devon President Ged Barton. Thanks must go to John and the Ottery club for being such excellent hosts on the day, and to all those who participated. It was nice to see players from all over the county taking part and particularly good to see competitors making the long trip from Cornwall. Thanks also to Stu Rae for looking after admin (and photos).

Devon vs Kernow 2022

May

Tregony PC hosted the annual Kernow v Devon match for the first time on Sunday and a good day was had by all. Kernow regain the bragging rights this year winning 18 games to Devon's 15, with 3 games drawn, so congratulations go to them.

As per usual the match was highly competitive but played in the right spirit and it was close margins in the end. Over 36 timed games only 12 points overall separated the teams.

Big thanks to Andrew Rose and his team for a well organised event and a splendid BBQ lunch. Even a few showers later did nothing to dampen enthusiasm for play on some tricky terrains. It was also great to see several new faces taking part from both sides.

Devon Triples 2022

May

A belated look at the Devon Triples Championship which took place a week or so ago at the Pig On The Hill, Westward Ho!
The home based team of Chris Jeffrey, John Violet and Mike Anderson took the honours with a clean sweep of wins. Runners up were the Chudleigh trio of Henry Pickett, Rob Thomas and Ian Ramsay.
A disappointing turnout for this event but those attending did enjoy good weather, good food & drink and good boule.
Gary Smith kindly administered the competition (probably because he was enjoying the drink too much to want to play!)
